A Portland jury on Friday awarded more than $1.6 million to an 84-year-old man who slipped in liquid laundry detergent at the Safeway store in St. Helens, breaking his leg and hindering him from living the active life he once had. The verdict against Safeway includes $1 million in punitive damages -- a rare award in a slip-and-fall case against a business in Oregon or elsewhere in the nation. Portland attorneys Greg and Jason Kafoury alleged a cover-up -- that the company destroyed video evidence and fiddled with records to present their case in the best possible light. After a five-day trial, jurors awarded Christopher Armstrong-Stevenson, now 85, every dollar he sought.
