Careless Smoking Results In Six Fire-Damaged Row Homes

A fast-moving blaze last week that charred six row homes and displaced 23 people was caused by careless smoking, a fire official said Wednesday. The fire began on the back porch of 440 N. Fulton St., Allentown fire Capt. John Christopher said Wednesday. He said the fire was sparked by "improperly discarded smoking materials," which are often cigarettes. The fire, which was reported about 7:50 p.m. Thursday, left nearly two dozen people homeless as they scrambled to find shelter with family or friends or at hotels. City inspectors have boarded up the blackened homes, but told fire officials the homes could be repaired and didn’t need to be razed, Christopher said.
