A chain reaction crash on Interstate 95 in Carmel, Maine, caused 30 cars to pile up west of Bangor Tuesday morning, stranding hundreds of drivers on the highway and seriously injuring one person, police said.

The first crash, which initial reports indicate was caused by the blinding sun, occurred at around 7:45 a.m., followed by a chain reaction of collisions involving several other vehicles, according to Maine State Police.

Police said there were some injuries, the extent of which are unknown, but specified that one person sustained serious injuries and was taken by a Lifeflight helicopter to a hospital in Bangor.

The pileup also stranded several hundred motorists and State police said the northbound side of the highway would likely be closed until at least noon.
