For every fraud investigator there‘s a moment when all the pieces fit together--the "A-ha! moment," as Alta Analytics product manager Bruce Crocco calls it. It once came at the expense of shoe leather and caffeine, as fraud investigators did the legwork (literally), then pored over paper files looking for clues. Today, the links in a fraud chain come together at the push of an Enter key as fraud-detection software has made the business of catching bad guys a whole lot easier. Dick Hughes spent 28 years with USF&G looking into fraud cases; he helped start the company‘s Special Investigations Unit.
